Leading through Change and Uncertainty with Impact

How often do you hear the word "change" in a day? How about “chaos”? It's almost impossible to avoid talking about change because it's happening all around us. Many organizations find themselves navigating through significant transitions. This can often feel like a storm of uncertainty, leaving teams and leaders questioning the path forward. AND we have good news! As leaders, we have the opportunity to guide our teams through this journey with impact and grace. Try any of the four strategies outlined here to lead through change and create a positive impact.

First, Focus on What's Not Changing

For many people, change equals stress. And often, this stress stems from not knowing what the future holds. Many of us like certainty. We like order, and structure. Instead of focusing on the changes coming for your team, zero in on what is not changing. Emphasize the parts of your work world that will stay consistent. Will they still get to work together? Or with the same clients? Or leverage their same skills in new ways? Highlighting the constants in a changing environment can lead to a more calm environment and peace of mind for your team and coworkers.

Be an Absorber, Not an Amplifier

As a leader, you know more about what's going on behind the scenes. While it might be tempting to share all the details with your team, try to protect them from unnecessary stress. Instead of spreading uncertainty, share the information they need to know to keep them focused and productive. In times of uncertainty, your team members will look to you to see how they might respond. If you’re calm and measured, it will instill confidence. If you’re anxious and mapping out worst-case scenarios, your team will pick up on your energy. Absorb the stress of the change; don’t amplify.

Stay True to Yourself in Messaging

There are times you'll face changes you might not completely agree with. It can be tough to deal with these situations and it's important to stick to your values and leadership principles. Sometimes you have to stay focused on the greater good or find the upside in a tough message. Be honest in your communication. Be kind. Be compassionate. Remaining true to your beliefs will build trust and respect with your team.

Allow Expression and Exploration

Change will bring up a lot of feelings and questions. People go through change at their own pace and in their own way. Make sure your team feels safe to share their thoughts and concerns. Let them ask questions, or talk about how they feel. This open communication builds trust and helps everyone handle change better.

Finally - and Critically: Take Care of Yourself

We can't stress this enough: take care of yourself! Leading through change is tough, and your ability to support your team depends on maintaining your own health and energy. Make sure to get enough rest, exercise, eat healthy food, and attend to your own mental health. Connect with trusted friends or colleagues. Take breaks to recharge. This will help you be at your best each day. For more easy-to-implement ideas, check out this Nova blog post

Leadership Coaching

Change is inevitable, and the way we handle it shapes our leadership impact. Helen Keller once said, “A bend in the road is not the end of the road…unless you fail to make the turn.” This is a great reminder that impactful leadership means being able to navigate the turn.

And - if you need more support during these tumultuous times, consider the value of an executive coach or join us at an upcoming retreat. The insights and connections from each of these experiences will provide clarity and further strengthen your leadership capability during periods of change.

Let's take this opportunity to lead our teams with strength, character and compassion. By doing so, we can create a positive leadership legacy.
