Leading in Turbulence: Navigating Complexity & Intensity

One of our clients recently shared a sentiment we've heard many times before, one that you can probably relate to: a feeling of complete overwhelm, being stretched too thin, and uncertain how or where to find answers. A high performer with decades of success…who now feels utterly clueless on how to move forward. Stuck. And ineffective. Like so many other clients, this leader is trying to manage in an increasingly complex world where the stakes are high and the pressure never lets up.

Workplace stress is a universal problem. According to Select Software Reviews, 83% of U.S. workers experience work-related stress, costing employers over $300 billion each year. So, how can leaders like you handle the challenges of these turbulent times? Here are some strategies on balancing leadership, accomplishment, sincerity and vulnerability.

 

1. Aim Outward, not Inward

Many of the high-performing people we work with are quick to turn the challenge on themselves: why can’t I fix this? What am I doing wrong? How have I let things get to this place? We’re here to remind you that it’s not you! It’s a crazy world right now. You’re still the smart, accomplished, creative, and effective leader you've always been. You’re working in unprecedented times: financially, organizationally, socially. You name it, it’s in flux. And that is NOT on you. 

 

2. Be Clear on Your Values

Knowing what’s important to you can help you navigate where best to spend your time and energy. If collaboration is a core value of yours, reach out to your peers. If family is a priority, let that guide your decisions. If your child’s first day of school falls at the same time as a work meeting, prioritize what truly matters. Your calendar is often a reflection of what’s most important to you. Does yours reflect your deep values? If not, adjust.

 

3. Set Boundaries

There will never be enough of you to go around. Recognize that you can’t be everything to everyone - and that people will always want more from you than you can give. Setting clear boundaries is essential to maintaining your well-being and effectiveness as a leader. Boundaries are not just about saying “no,” but about making deliberate choices that align with your values.

 

4. Simplify

Always start by asking yourself “How can I make this easier?” This mindset shift can be challenging, especially for perfectionists (if you know, you know), and we know that simplicity can have a big impact. Find the most straightforward, UNcomplicated, effective way forward and stick to it. Simplifying isn’t about taking shortcuts; it’s about concentrating on what really matters and letting go of the rest.

 

5. Get Back to Basics

Self-care often gets neglected when we are constantly working and on the go. But sticking to simple habits like eating well, getting a good night’s rest, staying hydrated, making time for reflection and exercising is essential. These routines keep you healthy and strong, giving you the ability to handle challenges more effectively.

 

6. Phone a Friend

Ask for help. You are NOT the only person going through this right now. Reach out to a friend or colleague to check in: how are they navigating? What tools and tricks have been helpful for them as they work through these challenges? Even if they don't have the perfect solution, just connecting and supporting each other can bring relief and a fresh perspective. The camaraderie will remind you that it's okay to ask for help.
