Focus on EQ, Not AI if You Want to Succeed in Business: Here’s How
Talk about AI is everywhere! You probably haven’t gone a week - or even a single day - without your conversation making its way to the topic of AI in our world. Some people love it, and some are more skeptical…but the fact is: AI is here to stay, and it WILL alter how we work. And we’re here to affirm that even the most advanced technologies can’t replace the human element of connection in leadership.
At Nova Leadership, we believe in the power of humanity in leadership. We value Emotional Intelligence (EQ) just as much—if not more—than AI. Travis Bradberry's books, Emotional Intelligence 2.0 and Emotional Intelligence Habits, are staples in our office, serving as a resource for us and for our clients with an emphasis on effective business leadership rooted in human connection.
What is EQ?
EQ, or Emotional Intelligence, is the cornerstone of effective leadership. It's about understanding your own emotions and those of others and using this understanding to manage interactions successfully. A Forbes article from earlier this year reminds us that, “If there's one thing that all of the most effective leaders and high-performing professionals have in common, and that anyone moving into 2024 needs to prioritize on their professional development radar, it's possessing high levels of EQ.”
Nova Leadership believes this too. We’ve written previously on the importance of EQ in leadership. And we’re back at it now because EQ matters. Your ability to practice and demonstrate higher levels of EQ is a factor in your success, the success of your team, and your organization. So - let’s get clear on what we mean, and how you can sharpen your EQ.
Bradberry Breaks EQ Down Into Four Dimensions:
Self-awareness: You can think of it as knowing yourself well without needing to uncover hidden secrets. As Bradberry puts it, "It comes from a straightforward and honest understanding of what makes you tick."
Self-management: This is more than just controlling your reactions. It’s about being flexible and proactive in choosing how you respond to situations. Bradberry emphasizes, "When you develop the ability to size yourself up quickly, and grab the reins before you head in the wrong direction, you can be flexible and choose positively and productively how to react in different situations."
Social awareness: Seeing beyond your own emotions to understand others' perspectives: according to Bradberry, "It’s easy to get caught up in your own emotions and forget to consider others’ perspective."
Relationship management: Building and maintaining strong connections. Bradberry defines "the bond you build with others over time" and stresses its importance in using emotional awareness to manage interactions effectively.
Practical Strategies to Enhance Your EQ
To strengthen your leadership toolkit with EQ, try these strategies:
Keep your cool: Maintain perspective, for yourself and your team.
Look at things from another point of view: Challenge your thinking by seeking out different viewpoints. Elvis even recorded a song about this (who knew!?) that reminds us:
If you could see you through my eyes
Instead of your ego
I believe you'd be, I believe you'd be
Surprised to see
That you've been blind
Active listening: Truly engage in conversation by listening to understand, not just to respond (tone, emotions, body language).
Conflict resolution: No one likes conflict, and ignoring conflict can make it worse in the long run. Address conflicts by being kind, honest, and direct.
Ask for feedback: Embrace opportunities for growth by actively seeking feedback from others. Isaac Asimov says it best, “It is the obvious which is so difficult to see most of the time. People say 'It's as plain as the nose on your face.' But how much of the nose on your face can you see, unless someone holds a mirror up to you?”
In a world increasingly dominated by AI and automation, human skills like Emotional Intelligence are more valuable than ever. As you explore tools like Chat GPT, Otter, or Jasper, remember that human discernment and leadership are irreplaceable. AI is only as effective as the humans guiding it—just like leadership is only as impactful as the EQ behind it.
